In 2010, the Queensland Government introduced the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program
Participation in the program is required if you have been disqualified from driving for one of the following reasons and would like to get your licence back;
- failing to give a specimen of breath
- driving under the influence of alcohol
- had two or more drink driving offences within a five-year period
- have been convicted of dangerous driving while affected by alcohol,
- or any other offence involving a breach of the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program
If you have been convicted of one of the offences within Queensland noted above, or your reading was 0.15% or higher, you were subject to an interlock device.
The Queensland Government has now changed the interlock requirements. If your suspension ends after 9 September 2021, these changes can apply to you (if you were convicted of the offence prior to this date).
If you are convicted of driving with a blood breath alcohol concentration of 0.10% or higher, these changes apply to you:
- You will need to participate in the interlock program;
- The program becomes performance based (previously time based) and will have two parts:
-
- A learning period for four months;
- A performance period for four months.
3. During the performance period, your interlock device will monitor:
- Breath samples each time your vehicle is used; and
- Scheduled interlock services
4. Your time in the program could be extended if you do not follow the rules during the four-month performance period.
5. If you do not participate, you cannot drive for five years (previously two years).
Example
For example, if you were disqualified from driving and your reading was 0.11% on 10 May 2021 and at such time you were disqualified for five months, the disqualification would end on 9 October 2021.
If you choose not to participate in the interlock program, you cannot drive for five years.
If you choose to participate in the interlock program, the above provisions will apply.
